Oculus Rift might be designed largely for the gaming industry – it’s fully immersive 3D experience is so good, that it has huge potential in other industries: such as online shopping, or in this case, social media.
The concept video dives into how Oculus Rift could be used by Facebookers to specifically enhance an online shopping experience. In the video demo, a user clicks a Facebook ad, which prompts the user to hook up his Rift and enter a virtual, immersive Facebook supermarket, which is home to an assortment of stores.
What would Facebook look like in Virtual Reality, on Oculus Rift?

In this video, the user purchases a Nordstrom satchel for $199. While ‘shopping’ the user can manipulate the bag, and even get advice from friends. The Facebook supermarket is a fully immersive 3D virtual reality experience, and make you feel like you are truly shopping in a bricks and mortar store.
The video showcases opportunities for both brands looking to sell wares, as well as advertisers.
After announcing the acquisition, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked about why he was so eager to invest into the VR startup, going so far as to call it a “longterm bet on the future of computing.”
