Sphero is a robotic sphere that you can drive around with your Smartphone device. Its fun, its neat, its like a RC car, but instead of a car, its a ball. Well Sphero just got an upgrade.
Sphero 2.0 is here and it’s smarter, faster and better than ever. If you’re not familiar with our little buddy the sphere, it’s a softball-sized sphere made from plastic with its gears and guts inside. You can connect to Sphero via Bluetooth and it charges via induction.
Sphero 2.0 is the same outside, still looking like a ball and all – but the real upgrade is inside. Moving at double the speed of the original, it has a maximum speed of over 2 meters per second. It’s got a firmware upgrade, a more powerful motor inside and a lower centre of gravity. It also happens to be waterproof
It also comes with a RGB LEDS and you can change the color via the app.
You need to work through a series of challenges to unlock Sphero’s top speed, and once you reach that top speed you can have Sphero launch itself off jumps nod ramps – which come included. Orbotix is selling a separate ‘nubby cover’ for drivers who tend to crash – and crash you will.
You can pick up a Sphero 2.0 at any Apple store for $130 with a partially transparent shell, so you can see the goodies inside.
