We’re three days out from Christmas…have YOU finished your shopping yet?
The fact is, the malls haven’t been as crazy this year (save for the consumer-trampling mess that is Black Friday) and a lot of it has to do with people slowly realizing how easy it is to make purchases online.
I’ll be the first to admit I was among those who were wary of digital consumerism at first. “I’m not giving my credit card information to the internet!” Of course I eventually came around and it seems others are too, and with good reason. This season of gift-giving is where online shines because of all the advantages that present themselves when you’re faced with the choice of getting trampled at the local shopping mall, or sitting in your underwear at home clicking a few buttons.
The products available at your local “gift shop” (customized t-shirts, plaques and posters, book ends, chocolate milk mixers) have assembled en mass on sites like ThisIsWhyImBroke and Etsy.
The other upside to buying online is finding products that may not even be readily available where you live. Whether you’re a Canadian browsing a .com or an American browsing a .uk, sometimes it’s worth the extra shipping cost to get that special item that you would have had to trek across the border to get a hold of. These sites also hold the advantage of helping out small businesses, and why wouldn’t you when you can go on eBay and find a seller whose got a list of specialty or one-of-a-kind items that cater specifically to consumers interests or personalities. That’s the stuff that good gifts are made of.
Of course, it is three days out from Christmas like I mentioned, so if you’re like me and you’re just discovering this now, you probably wanna get out to the mall. If you’re lucky, you’ve got a custom art or printing shop nearby. Customized t-shirts, phone cases or guitar picks are always good in a pinch. At least that’s what I’d want.
Keep online in mind though for your next gift-giving occasion. Because where else are you going to find a Jedi bathrobe or an alarm clock you turn off by shooting a target?
