Miitomo is more of a communications app that an actual game, letting players engage each other with their Miis. Miitomo is set to be the first of five titles coming to mobile platforms, which Nintendo has developed alongside Japanese giant DeNa. The biggest change is in the details: all games/apps will be used via a new Nintendo Account.
Starting February 17th, players can head to mittomo.com and pre-register for a Nintendo Account. If you have a Nintendo Network ID, like those used in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U or 3DS, the details of the account will be carried over. Social Media Accounts can also be link to create brand new accounts.
If you have none of the above, you will have to manually create a Nintendo Account with a email.
Nintendo has provided much in the way of information about how the new accounts will work. As it stands, any digital purchases from the eShop are locked onto the hardware you’ve used to download them rather than linked to your account. If your Wii U breaks, you are out of luck to re-download games you might have already purchased.
Hopefully the Nintendo Accounts will bring this systems into the post-iTunes world where media can be streamed and downloaded and taken wherever you go.
Alongside the launch of Miitomo and Nintendo Accounts, a new My Nintendo rewards program will also start, giving players from the UK and Ireland a ‘bonus’ if they create their accounts before Miitomo launches. Much like the old eStore setup, Nintendo looks to be bringing a refresh to its long-in-the-tooth Club Nintendo setup, which saw users fill out long, useless surveys for each game that was purchased.
“My Nintendo aims to become much more than a traditional rewards program…It is a more comprehensive service that rewards users for interacting with Nintendo products and services in a variety of ways. Miitomo users with a Nintendo Account will be able to take advantage of My Nintendo to enhance their experience.”

Miitomo is set to launch in March of this year, and will land on both iOS and Android devices.
