Microsoft Buys Minecraft developer for $2.5 Billion

After sudden rumours suggested Microsoft was reportedly interested in picking up Mojang, the Swedish software developer behind Minecraft, it has all come true.  Microsoft has announced the purchase of the wildly successful sandbox game for $2.5 billion USD.

Some speculate the deal has more to do with Microsoft’s desire to boost apps on its Windows Phone: Minecraft is currently enjoying a loyal following on both Android and iOS devices with no Windows Phone app to compete.

Mojang co-founder and Minecraft creator Markus Persson hasn’t been shy about criticizing Microsoft and Windows 8 in the past.

It has been reported that Persson approached Microsoft to propose the sale.

The news comes mere weeks after Minecraft finally landed on XBox One consoles, and the purchase of the fan-favorite sandbox game has led to strong criticism about what Microsoft may do to the game, and strong support from players who cant wait to play Minecraft on another platform.
