For the first time ever, Doctors have been able to treat a genetic disease before birth.

People born with a abnormality known as XLHED lack a protein crucial for the development of sweat glands.  That can lead them to overheat to a dangerous degree.  In a study in April, Doctors from Germany, the United States and Switzerland were able to flag three fetuses with the inherited disorder.

By injecting the fetuses with the missing protein directly into the amniotic sac at the right time, the team was able to restore the fetus’s ability to sweat in all three cases.

Researchers say the technique can be readily adapted for a variety of other birth disorders
