This sounds like an exaggeration, but it’s not: 40 percent of all food produced in the US of A is thrown away. There is a lot of time and resources put into producing food, and yet nearly half of it is sent to the landfill – it’s wasteful for both the food, and the amount of time put in to grow it. HomeBiogas is here to help.

For the past few years, the company has been working to develop a super simple home version of a bio-digester which would take in raw food waste and turn it into usable cooking gas or fertilizer. They’re back on KickStarter with version 2.0.
Here’s how it works: you feed food scraps into the machine’s digestions chamber – which could be anything compostable from meat, oil, eggs, or bones to paper, grass or plant clippings even bits of wood. Then, you introduce a special bacteria into the chamber and mix it all up. Then leave it along, let the bacteria do it’s thing, and they will eat all the organic material and give you back methane gas in return – which the HomeBiogas unit will collect and store. When you build up enough gas, you can hook up the take to a cooktop burner and cook away.
