The Federal Trade Commission has recently approved a new rule that will give consumers the right to a free copy of their credit report every year from each of the three big credit reporting agencies.

The freebie will be rolled out over a period of nine months, meant to prevent a hoard of credit report-seekers from breaking down the doors at Experian. Those in western states can request their free credit report now, while those on the east coast are due for theirs in September of this year.
So, while the government hasn’t really been able to do much to stop big mortgages companies from making you beg because you have a few late student loans from 10 years ago, you can take a bit of solace in known that you can now get that bad news for free.
