Best of 2018: The Oldest Modern Human outside Africa


Announced in January’s issue of Science, a partial jaw bone of a modern human was dated to between 177,000 years ago and 194,000 years ago.  That makes it the oldest evidence of modern man outside of Africa.

The jawbone predates earlier known remains of Homo Sapiens, and the find predates the earliest estimates of when modern man may have left the continent by more than 50,000 years.
