Research firm Gartner is forecasting that Android will cross 1 billion active users milestone this year. As we know, Android has already overtaken the 1 billion activations number but the active users are still said to be less than 1 billion. It is predicting the final number to be 1.1 billion by the end of 2014, which is a 26 percent increase from 2013.

Google’s Android is and will continue to be the most popular OS by a wide margin, much thanks to the growing popularity of low-cost smartphones. That segment of the market will this year help Android devices surpass shipments of 1 billion units for the first time. By 2017, more than 75 percent of Android’ shipments will come from emerging markets, Gartner said.

It is also predicting that Chrome OS will more than double its users this year to 4.7 million from 1.8 million in 2013. It further predicts Chrome OS to reach 8 million users in 2015.

Mobile phones are expected to dominate overall device shipments, with 1.9 billion mobile phones shipped in 2014, a five per cent increase from 2013. Ultramobiles, which include tablets, hybrids and clamshells, will take over as the main driver of growth in the devices market from 2014, with a growth rate of 54%
